Kannur University was established by the Act 22 of 1996 of Kerala Legislative Assembly. The University by the name "Malabar University" had come into existence earlier by the promulgation of an Ordinance by the Governor of Kerala, on 9th November 1995.

Research and Development Cell was established in Kannur University on 1-2-2018 with the following main objectives:
  •  To foster and to grow an active research culture
  •  To create synergies, strengthen interdisciplinary and collaborative research
  •  To make research socially relevant
  •  To co-ordinate research programmes of the University
  •  To provide administrative support for research projects.
At present Kannur University offers research programmes in 34 disciplines under its own teaching departments, affiliated colleges and recognised centres. Foreign students sponsored by ICCR are also admitted for Ph. D Programmes in Kannur University. Kannur University Research Directorate is striving for the fulfilment of its objectives and achieve goals through various services being provided to students, teachers, research supervisors and other stakeholders and to transform the University as the best destination for quality research.
